The best neighborhood for renters just moving to Chicago?

By: Steve Missirlian

I often get that question from newcomers to Chicago who are going to be renting.  There's never really a right answer to that question, but I always say that area is the most important for people who are just moving here.  Chicago is an amazing city that can offer so much for new people and people who have lived here their entire life.  However, you can get lost in it if you are living in a neighborhood of Chicago that does give you what you need.

For the new renters just moving to Chicago that are not sure where they want to live, but know they want to be walking distance from all the bars, restaurants and shops in Chicago, I always say Gold Coast is their best option. There is a reason why parking is so expensive in the Gold Coast and it's because you have everything at your doorstep.  At any area of the Gold Coast, you are always within walking distance of the fine dining restaurants such as Gibsons, Tavern on Rush or the recently opened Lou Malnatis.  You are also right near the lake and Oak Street Beach, and I never hear anyone complain about being near Lake Michigan.  Also within walking distance anywhere in the Gold Coast is all the shopping - Oak Street  and of course Michigan Avenue.  You barely need to leave Water Tower Place when you hit Michigan Avenue.

There are so many great neighborhoods that Chicago has to offer.  So many options that you often can't go wrong with any one of them when making that all important decision of whereto live.  Gold Coast is a great start for those newbies that want to experience many of the reasons why Chicago is known as such an amazing place to live.
